Education and Outreach

QVIR EPA works with the Scott Valley Elementary Schools and the Siskiyou County Office of Education.

Activities include the Aquarium Incubator Project, Water Quality Testing, Fish Dissections, and Arbor Day Poster Contest.

Water Festival/Bike Rodeo

The EPA Education Outreach program coordinates with the QVIR Tribal Community to participate in these events annually.

The tribal children participate in activities such as fly tying, animal track stamping, sand castle building, water quality testing,

river carvers, fish pole casting, aquifer demonstration, bubble making, well drilling, plumbing, safe drinking water

and information about our local watershed, green building and boat safety. Other state and county volunteers include

Fort Jones Fire Department, US Forest Service, Siskiyou County Department of Agriculture, California Department of Public

Health, and Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department.

Native Garden Project

The EPA Outreach program along with the help of the tribal community children planted a native seed collection garden.

The children conducted garden clean up, planted seeds and plants, weeded and watered, and will participate in the

harvest of vegetables and fruit. They will learn how to prepare delicious and nutritious snacks with the harvest.

They also participate in activities such as raising butterflies, a butterfly craft and making hummingbird feeders.

Surface Water Quality Monitoring

The Tribal EPA Department conducts surface and drinking water quality monitoring on the Reservation.

Thermal Refugia Dives

QVIR Tribal EPA cooperates with the US Forest Service, Northern California Resource Center, and HSU Fisheries.

Adopt -a- Highway/Water Way Clean-up

The EPA Department participates in the Adopt -a- Highway project bi-annually. This summer we collected approximately

45 pounds of garbage and 25 pounds of mixed recyclables on a three mile stretch of Quartz Valley Road. We also conducted

a Water Way Clean up this summer. We collected approximately 15 pounds of garbage and 10 pounds of mixed recyclables at

our local swim areas.

Fire Protection

The QVIR EPA Fire Protection crew works to clear dry debris from 35 feet around residence and community

buildings, and are also clearing the roadsides within reservation boundaries. This program is working specifically

within the CFP funding at this time.

Salmon Festival

The QVIR EPA Outreach Program coordinates this event annually. This year the Fort Jones, Quartz Valley, and Etna

Elementary Schools were in attendance. Approximately 350 students wandered through our 10 stations including Iron Gate

Hatchery Information, Fish Printing, Macro Invertebrate study, storytelling, puppet show, a culture booth, an obstacle game, spawning

surveys, lifecycle books, and the fish cook. This is always a treat. Quartz Valley Indian Reservation members stake and cook it traditionally

over a fire.

Culture Day

The QVIR EPA Outreach program coordinated with Fort Jones Elementary School to put together a

Quartz Valley Karuk Culture Day. The 3rd through 6th grade classes rotated through three classrooms

to participate in beading, fish printing, fry bread making, watch a cultural film, sample traditional foods, and

watch a display of ceremonial items, games, and songs.
